# Install and add the ClickHouse data source

The ClickHouse data source isn’t built into Grafana; it’s an installable plugin. In this milestone, you install the ClickHouse plugin from the plugin catalog and then add a new ClickHouse data source. Both actions require the Grafana organization administrator role.

To install and add the data source, complete the following steps:

1. Open **Administration > Plugins and data > Plugins**.
2. In the **Search** field, enter `ClickHouse` to filter the available plugins.
3. Locate the **ClickHouse** data source plugin (published by Grafana Labs) and click it to view the plugin details.
4. Click **Install** and wait for the status to change to **Installed**. If the plugin is already installed, skip this step.
5. Open **Connections > Data sources**.
6. Click **Add new data source** in the upper right of the page.
7. In the search field, enter `ClickHouse` to filter the available data source types.
8. Click **ClickHouse** to select the data source and begin configuration.

You now have a ClickHouse data source ready to configure. It’s named `grafana-clickhouse-datasource` by default; you can rename it by clicking the name at the top of the settings page, for example to `ClickHouse observability`. The name appears on dashboard panels, so choose something meaningful.

In the next milestone, you’ll enter the connection details and credentials for your ClickHouse server.
