# Configure the connection URL

The connection URL tells Grafana where to send trace queries. The format depends on your Tempo environment.

Use the URL format that matches your backend:

Expand table

| Environment | URL format | Example |
|---------------------------|------------------------------------------|-----------------------------------------------------|
| Self-managed Tempo (HTTP) | `http://<host>:3200` | `http://tempo:3200` |
| Grafana Cloud Traces | `https://tempo-<zone>.grafana.net/tempo` | `https://tempo-prod-01-eu-west-0.grafana.net/tempo` |
| Grafana Enterprise Traces | URL of your GET gateway | `https://get.example.com/tempo` |

To configure the connection URL, complete the following step:

1. In the **URL** field under the **Connection** section, enter the query URL for your Tempo backend.

For example, for Grafana Cloud Traces, enter a URL like `https://tempo-prod-01-eu-west-0.grafana.net/tempo`. For self-managed Tempo, enter a URL like `http://tempo:3200`.

**Tip:** The URLs above are for **querying** traces from Grafana. To send traces *to* Tempo (OTLP endpoints), refer to [Set up tracing](/docs/grafana-cloud/send-data/traces/set-up/).

In the next milestone, you configure authentication for the connection.
